Samosely: self-settlers in Chernobyl

This is a serious project. It has clearly taken a lot of work and dedication, and this is evident in the images. The photographer respects their subject and the subjects respect the photographer: there is a lot of empathy here. I totally respect the effort it must have taken to travel to this poisoned place, build a relation and trust with these people to create these images. I think your work shows a real dedication and commitment which all the very best artists have. This really shines through in the work. Nothing will stop you.
More than, or at least equal to this, the images are very strong. They tell us so much about each person. I found myself feeling humbled that these people have so little and that have returned to, or stayed within such a poisoned, deathly landscape. Does this give them more, or remove what they had? Your use of colour attests to this: each person has a colourful home interior, even with quite bright colours - a sign of strong life and personal aesthetic amidst what we assume to be a mutated situation everywhere else in their lives. These colours speak of folk tradition and a sense of local culture - perhaps what made these people stay, or not leave - what makes a sense of 'home' and 'roots', in terms of culture and community. These are deep issues, deep questions to raise in a body of work, and I really respect it.
Image 4 particularly stood out to me for its wonderful sense of composition and colour (both warmth and cold). In some senses your work is very painterly, and I think it can be seen most particularly in this image. But you do not dominate the subjects - you give the subjects a lot of dignity. I would recommend, in a way, that you look at Boris Michailov, except your work is more humane. It also made me think of Salgado, except his work has too much drama. You could look at the 'traveller' series of Tom Hunter. But really I just think you should continue in the way you are doing now, because it is very good indeed. Perhaps you could publish this work as a book as well as think about exhibition formats.

이것은 매우 진지한 프로젝트입니다. 분명 엄청난 노력과 헌신이 있었을 것입니다. 사진을 통해서도 확실히 느낄 수 있습니다. 사진작가는 자신의 피사체(被寫體)를 존중하고 있고, 피사체 또한 사진작가를 존중하고 있습니다. 여기에는 많은 감정이입(感情移入)이 있습니다. 방사능 물질로 오염된 마을을 찾아 마을사람들과 인간관계와 신뢰를 쌓고 이런 사진들을 찍을 수 있게 될 때까지 얼마나 많은 노력을 있었을까, 저는 그 노력을 전적으로 존중합니다. 저는 작가님의 작품이 진정한 헌신과 책임의 모습을 보여주고 있다고 생각합니다. 그런 모습은 최고의 작가만이 가질 수 있는 것입니다. 작품 속에서도 고스란히 나타납니다. 어느 것도 작가님의 진심을 가로막을 수 없을 것입니다.
그런 모습 이상으로, 아니 적어도 그런 모습만큼, 작가님의 사진들은 아주 강렬합니다. 작품 속의 사람들이 우리에게 전하는 이야기가 많습니다. 이 사람들에게는 변변한 것 하나 남아 있지 않다는 사실에, 그리고 이 사람들이 방사능 물질로 오염되어 죽음처럼 삭막한 곳에 그대로 남아 있었거나 아니면 다시 돌아왔다는 사실에 제 자신이 숙연해졌습니다. 작가님의 이러한 헌신과 책임 이 사람들에게 보탬이 될 것인지, 아니면 이 사람들이 가지고 있었던 것을 빼앗아갈 것인지는 작가님이 색깔을 활용하는 모습에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 사진 속 인물들이 살고 있는 집안 내부는 색깔이 화려합니다. 심지어 분위기 또한 밝아 보입니다. 이 사람들이 살아가는 곳은 전부 이전과 전혀 다르게 변했을 것이라고 우리는 생각하고 있지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 강인한 삶과 이들이 찾는 아름다움은 아직 남아 있다는 것을 보여주고 있습니다. 이러한 색깔들은 문화와 공동체라는 측면에서 민족적 전통과 현지 문화의 느낌을 그대로 전해줍니다. 어쩌면 이것 때문에 이 사람들이 이곳에 그대로 남아 있었거나 아니면 다시 돌아왔을 수도 있고, 이것 때문에 ‘고향’과 ‘뿌리’라는 느낌을 받는 것일 수도 있습니다. 이러한 부분은 작품을 통해 제기하기에는 너무 근본적인 문제이고 본질적인 질문이기 때문에, 저는 진심으로 높이 평가하고 싶습니다.
‘사진4’는 구성과 색깔(따뜻함과 차가움 모두를 보여주는 색깔) 표현이 너무 좋아서 특히 제 눈에 들어옵니다. 어떤 면에서, 작가님의 작품은 매우 회화적입니다. 제 생각에는 그런 특징이 이 사진에서는 아주 특별하게 보일 수 있습니다. 하지만, 작가님은 결코 피사체를 지배하고 있지 않습니다. 오히려 피사체의 품위를 지켜주고 있습니다. 어떤 면에서는 Boris Michailov의 작품을 연상시킵니다. 물론, 작가님의 작품이 한층 인간적입니다. Salgado가 떠오르기도 하지만, 이분의 작품은 너무 극적인 요소가 많습니다. Tom Hunter의 ‘여행자’ 시리즈도 생각납니다. 하지만 작가님의 작품이 너무 좋기 때문에, 저는 작가님의 현재 작업 방식을 계속 고수하는 것이 좋다고 생각합니다. 이번 작품을 책으로 발간하는 것은 물론, 전시회도 한번 고려해보시기 바랍니다.
